CAF Champions League: Hope retains title after VAR rank

Esperance retained the title of the Total Champions League after being declared the winner after winning 1-0 at the Wydad Athletic Club in the last first leg on Friday at the Olympic Stadium in Radès, near Tunis.

The feat, the fourth overall Esperance title, saw the Blood and Gold join the Egyptian giants Al Ahly, TP Mazembe of DR Congo and Nigerian Enyimba to win two consecutive titles in the continental championship.

After a 1-1 draw in the first leg last week in Rabat, the match was the highlight of the club championships for the 2018/19 transition season.

Taha Ybadine Khenissi was the first to score, but his quarter-turn header was clumsy and landed right in the hands of Wydad goalkeeper Ahmed Tagnaouti.

In the 21stAt the minute, Belaili, an Algerian importer, pbaded Saad Bguir but he did not use it because his shot went over the target.

Wydad seems to have succumbed to the pressure of the hosts but found his feet soon after. Three minutes into the half-hour game, Yahya Jabrane infiltrated Esperance's defense but Rami Jeridi saved the shot.

Two minutes later, Aymane El Hbadouni's head came up against a spectacular dive from Jeridi.

Moments later, Belaili tried again the opening match, but still had no luck, his shot being escaped, without any real threat.

Four minutes before the break, a nice demonstration of skills from Ayman Ben Mohamed, who dribbled past his marker, before moving on to Belaili, who hit a curler who zoomed in to the upper corner of the net to open the score.

Wydad has taken on more aggressive and even eager for luck. Ten minutes after the break, El Hbadouni's shot from inside the penalty area was blocked by Esperance captain Khalil Chammam.

The turn of the match was at the exact moment when Walid El Karti's header cleared the deadlock but the goal was marked by the dismay of the Wydad team and technical team.

The match was interrupted for more than an hour after Wydad dropped out of play. After several consultations, the match being interrupted for a good while and Wydad's refusal to resume the game, referee Dad Bakary Gbadama whistled to end the match. Esperance was declared winner as they headed for their fourth title.
