George Lwandamina
United ZESCO coach George Lwandamina said he needed to protect his "integrity" and "pride" after his 2-1 victory over Asante Kotoko in the last CAF Confederation Cup group match , Sunday.
ZESCO United has been accused of wanting to play softly in order to help the Ghanaian giants qualify at the expense of the fiercest opponents, Nkana FC, also in action against Al Hilal in Sudan.
The Zambian giants have nothing to do after their elimination after losing 3-0 against rivals Nkana FC at the penultimate match in Kitwe last week.
Asante Kotoko was to return to Ghana with maximum points to secure her entry into the quarter-finals after missing an opportunity to do so after the 1-1 deadlock against Al Hilal in Kumasi last Sunday. .
But the hopes of Porcupine Warriors were dashed after Jesse Were and Kondwani Mtonga capitalized on defensive defenses to win the game for ZESCO after Stephen Nyarko gave the advantage to the Ghanaians in the first period.
S addressing the press, coach Lwandamina said his team had won the match to make a statement to their accusers.
"They wanted it more as their coach had said, but we also had to win to protect our pride and integrity, so we gave them good luck for their money.
"Both teams showed character, it was a match in uniform, but unfortunately both teams are excluded from the competition."
ZESCO and Kotoko finished the competition with seven points each.
