The African Center for Justice and Human Rights, CAJDH, has expressed deep concern over the continued detention of Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine by the administration of President Yoweri Museveni.

The human rights group, in a statement Sunday in Abuja by its executive director, Chinwendu Nduka Edede, said it was “alarmed by the report on the continued detention of the Ugandan opposition leader , Bobi Wine, by the country’s military and police despite an order from the High Court declaring his house arrest illegal.

“We condemn this brazen attack on the nation’s constitution and the rule of law under a so-called democracy.

“The CAJDH describes the continued siege of the House of Wine as barbaric, devilish and shameful.

“We try to say that keeping him in secret with him and his family for so long is primitive and unnecessary.

“We also call on international organizations and countries committed to democracy and the rule of law to sanction President Yoweri Museveni for this cruel and cruel display of power,” the statement said.

The rights group added: “The CAJDH is also seeking the support of the United Nations and the African Union to pressure President Museveni to allow common sense to prevail and release Wine from illegal detention.

“Until this is done, we urge all countries and these international organizations and others to establish close ties with Uganda and President Museveni.

“They should also consider banning travel to Museveni and other members of his cabinet until the president is ready to respond to calls from peace-loving individuals and groups to release the opposition leader.”
