Hakan Calhanoglu is unlikely to return to Germany with RB Leipzig, according to Ralf Rangnick.

RB Leipzig's hopes of signing Hakan Calhanoglu seem to have disappeared after coach and sports director Ralf Rangnick declared the deal "financially impossible".

Information in Italy suggests that Leipzig had accepted a 20 million euro contract to bring Calhanoglu back into the Bundesliga after leaving AC Milan.

However, Rangnick effectively ended the speculation, telling reporters: "The deal is financially impossible.

Publisher's choice

"We obviously know him, since he played in the Bundesliga, but he now plays for Milan.

"We already knew its price, so it is absolutely impossible for us to act from a financial point of view."

Calhanoglu is aware that the Bundesliga started his career in Germany with Karlsruher, making more than 50 appearances for the club between 2011 and 2013 before joining Hamburg.

He would spend only one season at the club, helping them avoid relegation through the play-offs, before joining Bayer Leverkusen, his rival in the Bundesliga, in the summer of 2014.

During his stay in Leverkusen, Calhanoglu received a four-month ban from FIFA for breach of contract concerning his stay in Karlsruher.

After three seasons spent at BayArena, Calhanoglu moved to Milan in the summer of 2017 for 20 million euros.

After a slow start, the 24-year-old flourished under Gennaro Gattuso in the second half of the 2017-18 campaign, scoring five goals in 11 games in all competitions.

However, the Turkish international has struggled to keep up this trend this season, finding the net only once in 24 games – against 91 Dudelange in the Europa League in November.

This led to speculation about an exit in January, RB Leipzig being considered the favorite.

This move seems to be over for the moment, although Rangnick's recent comments may be a tactic designed to force the price down.

Leipzig has already been occupied during the window of January, signing two permanent contracts.

Malian midfielder Amadou Haidara was the first to arrive at the beginning of the month on behalf of Austrian RB Salzburg for a contract until 2023.

US international Tyler Adams has arrived on the side of the New York MLS Red Bulls for a four and a half year contract.
