Many California hospitals are penalized for offenses that have caused or are likely to cause injury or death to patients. A hospital is fined for contributing to the death of a patient after leaving a surgical sponge inside the patient.
Death of the patient
Mercy Medical Center in Redding, California faces $ 47,500 fine after California Public Health Department (CPDH) investigations revealed that one of the patients at the facility died after left a surgical sponge in his abdomen.
Evidently, the patient went to the hospital to bypbad the large, diseased blood vessels in the groin and abdomen, but was again hospitalized after stopping the patient's heart. X-rays revealed the presence of a sponge in the patient's lower left belly and, unfortunately, the patient eventually died.
Investigation
The CPDH investigation into the subject concluded that the surgical sponge left in the patient's abdomen had contributed to the death. Examination of the autopsy revealed that the cause of the patient's death was peritonitis or inflammation of tissue lining the wall of the abdomen, resulting from the surgical sponge left in the patient's body after surgery.
During an interview, a nurse present at the operation said that she and the scrub technician had counted all the sponges and that the count was accurate. However, she later stated that the bag in which the worn sponges were placed had divisions and partitions and that, if the separations were separated, a single sponge would have looked like two sponges.
As such, the CPDH imposed a fine on the hospital for failure to comply with the licensure requirements that caused serious injury or the death of a patient. This is the second Immediate Jeopardy administrative sanction of the Mercy Medical Center.
Hospital sanctions
In addition to the Mercy Medical Center, the CPDH also sanctioned four other hospitals for various offenses, all of which were committed in 2017. The Eisenhower Medical Center, the Fresno Heart and Surgical Hospital and the Saddleback Memorial Medical Center were sanctioned. the first Immediate Jeopardy administrative sanctions of hospitals, while the medical center of the University of California at Irvine got its sixth administrative penalty Immediate Jeopardy.
