April 25, 2019 – The California Cancer Treatment Center Protons has announced two major efforts that represent significant advances in bad cancer treatment research and non-invasive, targeted proton therapy. Current California Protons patients as of February 4, 2019 are invited to enroll in the Proton Collaborative Group (PCG) registry of more than 13,000 patients. In addition, the PCG BRE007-12 clinical trial on partial bad irradiation in early-stage bad cancer will recruit approximately five to eight women per year.
The PCG registry exists since 2010. This is a prospective follow-up study that collects and badyzes patient information to badess the disease process and outcomes. related to treatment, thus defining the strengths and weaknesses of proton radiotherapy. The main goal of the PCG BRE007-12 study on partial bad irradiation is to determine the absence of ipsilateral bad recurrence in patients receiving partial bad proton radiotherapy limited to tumor area three years after treatment. One of the goals of this study is to determine whether limiting radiation to only a portion of the bad is as effective as traditional full-bad treatment. A number of trials have suggested that this "partial bad" approach is as effective as whole bad treatment and may also be less toxic. Performing such partial bad treatments with protons can help further reduce toxicity by taking advantage of the ability of protons to accurately conform to the target area without giving an "overflow" of radiation to surrounding healthy tissues such as the lungs. and the heart.
PCG has partnered with 11 proton processing centers in the United States and data has been used in nearly 50 scientific manuscripts, posters and academic presentations. The PCG research has been presented at 20 medical conferences and has been published in a number of peer-reviewed medical journals.
The patient registry and the partial bad irradiation test are both approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). These trials complement ongoing research projects conducted by the California Protons Cancer Therapy Center with the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Foundation full nodal radiation.
