Africa Cup of Nations beginners Madagascar took his place in the quarterfinals by beating Congo DR during a penalty shoot-out on Saturday.

Here, PA is watching the outsiders of the Indian Ocean Island tournament that have stormed the competition.

The national team of the fourth largest island in the world was formed in 1947. Madagascar made its debut in a triangular tournament with Mauritius and Reunion. They lost their first match in Mauritius before beating Reunion 4-2 to record an inaugural victory. Madagascar has not even bothered to enter the first seven editions of the CAN after their launch.

Madagascar is known as Barea – a kind of zebu cattle that appears on Madagascar's coat of arms. Horned cattle are not native to Madagascar but constitute an export from South Asia.

The French boss Nicolas Dupuis actually has two jobs. Aged 51, he was named director of Madagascar in March 2017 and became technical director of FC Champy National 91, champion of France, in January 2019.

Madagascar ranked in the FIFA rankings with 190, making it the lowest position in its history, until March 2014. But the Barea are now ranked 108th and should progress further after a tournament that has them shocked, Nigeria, ranked three times, ranked 63 places higher than them – 2-0 in group stage.

One to watch

Stikers Carolus Andriamatsinoro and Lalaina Nomenjanahary were outstanding players in Egypt and both scored in Nigeria's victory. But one player to watch is Romario Baggio Rakotoarisoa, a 21-year-old midfielder who has a lot to offer.
