After twelve days of group stage and two days of rest, the trip to the African Cup of Nations, AFCON, glory is resuming today in the land of the pyramids, in Egypt.
The group stages resulted in numerous incidents related to goals, misses, goofs and tactics. Not to mention the fans in the stands, the permutations about who qualifies for the round of 16 not to mention the empty stages.
But with the group stage over, eight of the 24 teams were eliminated and sixteen teams will be reduced over the next four days to eight for the quarter-finals.
Key statistics and facts from action in the group stage
Quarterfinal schedule
- Senegal vs. Benign
- Nigeria vs. South Africa
- Algeria vs Ivory Coast
- Madagascar vs. Tunisia
Quarter 1: All you need to know
Senegal vs. Benign
The match will take place at the June 30 stadium of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, where the Teranga Lions will be opposed to the squirrels of Benin.
The two teams, who have never won the prestigious award, hope to qualify for the semi-finals and take a step forward in history.
Sadio Mane's Senegal will be a favorite in the match but will be wary of the Beninese team that has not yet won or lost a match of this tournament, after holding the giants of football like Cameroon, Ghana and Morocco in deadlock.
"We must give each team their right and the respect of Benin. There are no small teams in Africa, the quality is very similar. Even if we are the favorites on paper, the newspapers do not decide anything, "said Senegal coach Aliou Cissé.
"Our presence at this stage is not a coincidence, we have worked hard and I believe in my players," said Benin coach Michel Dussuyer.
Senegal and Benin have not met before AFCON l & # 39; history.
Nigeria vs. South Africa
Nigeria, three-time champion of Africa, will face South African Bafana Bafana, winner of the tournament in 1996.
The Super Eagles who defeated their Cameroonian opponents in the round of 16 will hope to avoid the fate of their host, Egypt, who was upset by South Africa in the previous stage.
"We are preparing very well for the match because it will be very difficult and against a strong team," said Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo, before the meeting on July 10 at the international stadium in Cairo.
South Africa beat Nigeria in their opening match of AFCON qualifiers in June 2017, and were 1-1 in the second leg.
"Nigeria are one of the best teams in this tournament and it will be a tough match," said South African coach Stuart Baxter.
Head to head record
- Nigeria 2-0 South Africa semi-final in 2000
- Nigeria 4-0 South Africa, group stage in 2004
Quarter-finals: five ex-champions, three non-winners
Five teams in the quarterfinals have tasted AFCON glory before against three others who pursue her for the first time.
There are nine trophies among the five former winners. Nigeria (three), Cote d 'Ivoire (two), one for South Africa, Tunisia and Algeria.
Three teams are pursuing a historic first. Senegal, Benin and Madagascar. Incidentally, this figure will decrease tomorrow, while Senegal will face Benin in the first quarter-final.
West Africa's domination of numbers continues. Four teams against two each from northern and southern Africa.
In two days, on July 10th and 11th, the last four will be sorted as the race for the finals gets under way. Will it be a former winner who will recover the trophy? It will be a blank winner – for lack of a better word. Time will tell us.

June 6: second day of the round of 16 [Previews]
Egypt vs. South Africa
The hosts are back against South Africa in the round of 16, especially the 16 th of the competition.
The way from Egypt to this stage was flawless. Win all three games and not concede a goal. They finished first in their group (Uganda, DRC, Zimbabwe).
South Africans were third in their group with Morocco, Cote d 'Ivoire and Namibia. Their only victory came against Namibia. The Bafana Bafana have qualified as one of the top four ranked teams.
There are eight trophies between the two sides. Egypt has a record of seven titles and South Africa boasts of its 1996 glory when it was welcomed and won. Egypt beat South Africa to shelter rights after CAF stripped Cameroon of rights by the end of 2018.
Nigeria vs. Cameroon
Nigeria and Cameroon also have eight trophies between them. Cameroon with five and Nigeria with three.
The stakes are high for a Cameroonian team that has not managed to obtain the essential goals and a Nigerian team that must make a firm statement after the defeat against the beginners, Madagascar.
Both sides were shaken by bonus streaks, the Cameroonians just before the tournament and Nigerians staged their event during the group stage.
Senegal against Uganda
Senegal maintained its lead in the first half to defeat Uganda by a draw in the round of 16 clashes played Friday night in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
A strike by Sadio Mane in the 15th minute means the Teranga Lions have qualified for the quarter-finals where they will meet Benin's Squirrels.
Uganda finished second in its group behind its host country, Egypt. Senegal also finished in the same position behind Algeria.
In the first round of the 16, Benin shocked Morocco by beating him on penalties after a draw and extra time.
Senegal lost the 2002 final when Uganda lost it in 1978.
Morocco expelled by Benin
The first round of play between Morocco and Benin ended with a victory for the Benin squirrels. The match was decided on penalties after a draw – all draws led to extra time in Cairo.
The West Africans were the best-trained in the game by scoring four goals against one of the North African giants and their favorites before the tournament.
The first half ended without a goal before Benin took a surprise lead in the 54th minute on Adilehou. The Moroccans responded in the 76th minute via En-Nesyri.
This is the first time North Africans have conceded this tournament after a triple win without a spot in the group stage. Benin is qualified after having obtained a third place in group F.

The other two are from North Africa: Algeria and its host, Egypt. With Tunisia, all the North African teams of the tournament stood out from the groups.
The team defeated Ivory Coast and South Africa after defeating Namibia in the first match. In the end, it took a goal to score the most points against Namibia.
For its part, Benin has qualified for the round of 16 as one of the top four ranked teams. They competed in a group that had Ghana, Cameroon champions and Guinea Bissau.
They drew all their three games. A draw against Ghana and a draw against Cameroon and Guinea-Bissau, but three points were enough to get them through a favorable record of goals.

Cranes will look to get behind them and qualify for the quarter-finals. They will first have to face Aliou Cissé and his accusations. Time will tell us.
