Algeria won the Africa Cup of Nations after beating Senegal 1-0 in the final in Egypt.
The strike of Baghdad Bounedjah after just 79 seconds – the fastest goal in the history of the competition – sealed the victory of the Desert Foxes.
Senegal was sentenced to a VAR penalty, which only added to the sneaky atmosphere and stifling conditions of the Cairo international stadium.
But a solid defense from Algeria has allowed them to maintain their narrow lead and win a first title in the CAN for 29 years.
Unlike many other finals, both teams entered the match after already playing in the group stage. Algeria emerged victorious from the 1-0 victory.
Since it was the opening game of the group, this did not seem to be a psychological benefit. Instead, Algeria would find a huge slice of good fortune after only 79 seconds.
Ismael Bennacer takes possession of the ball on the left flank and sends Bounedjah close to the goal. The attacker still had a lot to do, but found a space of 20 meters and decided to shoot.
Despite Salif Sane's efforts to block the shot, it took a devastating deflection before Senegal's goalkeeper, Alfred Gomis, pbaded through the net.
The goal sparked crazy celebrations on the Algerian bench as the whole team rushed to the sidelines. Had they celebrated too much too soon?
Senegal started to find its mark in the match as Mbaye Niang approached with a fierce 20-meter shot that cleared the crossbar a few inches.
Sadio Mane was fortunate not to see the red after seeming to throw an elbow into Sofiane Feghouli's chest before a corner was about to be caught.
The referee, perhaps unobserved, let the game continue without the intervention of the VAR.
After the break, Senegal was thirsty for equalization and had almost realized its wish. Ismaila Sarr pierced the center on the right and pierced a center that hit the arm of Adlene Guediora. The referee is quickly directed to the place.
But after a long delay, Cameroonian leader Alioum Alioum consulted the TV screen and canceled the decision with the help of the VAR.
Since Gediora's arm was at his side, it seemed like the right decision.
Senegal continued to advance, with Niang missing a golden opportunity after skirting the goalkeeper before firing into the net.
But Algeria held up well despite being stuck on the edge of its zone as it won a famous victory in Cairo.
