Former Ghanaian international Derek Boateng has highlighted the importance of veteran striker Asamoah Gyan against the Black Stars' ambitions to win the next Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Egypt.

The selection of 33-year-old striker Kayserispor for the championship from June 21 to July 19 has become a topic of discussion following his recent injury, fitness and play time challenges at the club level.

Calls for his exclusion intensified last week when he announced his surprise retirement from international service after being stripped of the role of captain of the national team. He turned around two days later after Ghana's president, Nana Akufo-Addo, spoke to her privately.

"Even if you will not play it [Gyan] in the starting lineup, you must take it [to the tournament] because in this type of tournaments, it takes experienced players around the team, "Boateng told Pulse Ghana.

"Some players have never played in the Afcon before.

"Believe me, this tournament is different from the World Cup, it's very difficult."

Gyan, Ghana's top scorer with 51 goals in 106 matches – has been named the new "captain general".

The former Sunderland man has participated in all Nations Cup tournaments since 2008 and has also represented Ghana at three World Cup tournaments in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

At the next Afcon match, Ghana faced defending champions Cameroon, Benin and Guinea-Bissau in Group F.

The Black Stars are looking to win their fifth title and their first in 37 years.
