Lightly armed and with limited authority, UN peacekeepers are deployed in many hot spots around the globe.
These peacekeepers have been repeatedly targeted in Mali, which is now the most dangerous mission. The latest attack took place last Sunday when 10 Chadian soldiers were killed as badailants stormed the UN camp.
A group linked to al Qaeda said it had carried out the attack in response to the Chadian president's decision to restore diplomatic relations with Israel.
The UN has reported an outbreak of violence against its peacekeepers.
In 2017, 53 soldiers were killed, the highest number of UN peacekeepers registered.
So, what hope is there for the UN's efforts to maintain peace in the conflict zones of the world?
