The world of the Foundation Plastics Pact Network welcome the Canadian plastics pact, led by The Natural Step Canada.
The Foundation’s Plastics Pact network is a global response to plastic waste and pollution, enabling vital knowledge sharing and coordinated action. Each plastics pact brings together companies, policymakers and NGOs from around the world, who through shared ambition, combined expertise and collaboration, create regional and national solutions to plastic waste and pollution.
The Canadian Plastics Pact brings together more than 40 organizations, including companies across the Canadian plastics value chain, government institutions and NGOs, all working towards a shared vision of a circular economy for plastics. Implementing partners for the initiative include the Government of Canada and companies such as Kraft Heinz Canada, Nestlé Canada and Walmart Canada, with other organizations being invited to join us.
Members will work together towards four joint 2025 goals:
- Define a list of plastic packaging to be designated as problematic or unnecessary and take measures to eliminate them
- Support efforts to ensure that 100% of plastic packaging is designed to be reusable, recyclable or compostable
- Take ambitious actions to ensure that at least 50% of plastic packaging is effectively recycled or composted
- Ensure an average of at least 30% recycled content in all plastic packaging (by weight)
Progress against these targets will be made public annually.
“By setting clear goals for 2025 and working together to achieve them, the companies and policymakers of the Canadian Pact on Plastics have taken an important step towards a circular economy for plastics, in which it never becomes waste or pollution We are delighted to welcome the Canadian Plastics Pact to our growing global network of pacts, and I hope to see many more organizations unite behind the vision of a circular economy for plastics that has already brought together more than 1000 organizations around the world through our New Plastics Economy initiative. “ Sonja Wegge, Pact on Plastics Program Manager, Ellen MacArthur Foundation
