Cancer costs account for 2% of Iran's health expenditure

TEHRAN – Cancer-related medical costs are even higher than cardiovascular disease because they account for 2% of the country's health care expenditures, said Deputy Minister of Health Iraj Harirchi.

He made the remarks Thursday at the opening ceremony of the 14th International Congress on Breast Cancer, reported the IRNA news agency.

It is projected that the cancer will increase by 115% in the country, so taking timely action should control this increase, said Harirchi.

The growth of the aging population in the country is the main reason for this increase, he said, adding that cancer is currently the second leading cause of death in the country.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world and is responsible for about 9.6 million deaths in 2018. Worldwide, about one in six deaths is due to cancer, says the World Health Organization. Health (WHO).

About 70% of cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. The economic impact of cancer is significant and increasing. The total annual economic cost of cancer in 2010 was estimated at about $ 1.16 trillion.
