"Although cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, most patients do not die of cancer, they usually die from another cause," said the researcher Nicholas Zaorsky, radiation oncologist at the Penn State Cancer Institute.

The findings come from an badysis of data relating to 8.6 million US patients with invasive cancer – a cancer that has spread from its original location to surrounding tissues – between 1973 and 2014.
The investigators found that 0.15% of the patients died by suicide, a rate more than four times that of the general population.
Although the risk of suicide in most cancer patients has decreased in the five years following diagnosis, the risk remained high in people with Hodgkin's lymphoma and testicular cancer, the results showed.
The study, published Jan. 14 in Nature Communications, shows the need for a comprehensive approach to cancer care, according to researchers.
