    Cancer Patient Wins Lottery and Plans to Treat Wife for Dream Vacation



CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A cancer patient in North Carolina has big plans after winning a $ 250,000 prize through a scratch lottery ticket.

The North Carolina Education Lottery announced Monday that Richard Beare of Charlotte, a retiree who had recently been diagnosed with stage four liver cancer, bought the winning ticket two weeks ago at Charlotte QuikTrip.

"I rarely play the lottery," said the former mechanic. "I only stopped because my wife asked me to get a Powerball ticket because the jackpot was so high."

He also bought four Carolina Black scratch tickets. The last ticket won the prize.

Beare said his wife was stunned.

"She was in shock and kept looking at the bill," said Beare, who claimed her prize – $ 176,876 after tax – Monday.

He said that he wanted to travel and offer his wife the vacation of his dreams.

"My wife has always wanted to go to Italy because that is where her descendants come from," he said. "Now I can take it."
