HONG KONG, Sept.6 (Reuters) – Former Iranian coach Afshin Ghotbi has parted ways with Chinese Super League (CSL) team Cangzhou Mighty Lions, the club announced on social media on Monday.

Ghotbi had led the team to just two league wins this season to leave Cangzhou seventh in the eight-team Group A of the Guangzhou-based CSL.

Cangzhou will now feature in the league’s relegation rounds when he resumes in early December.

The 57-year-old was named in late 2019 when the club were known as Shijiazhuang Ever Bright and oversaw their relegation to China League One last year.

However, the collapse of the champions Jiangsu FC earned the club a reprieve and they were reinstated in the CSL for the 2021 campaign.

Ghotbi, who was Guus Hiddink’s assistant when South Korea reached the 2002 World Cup semi-finals, was Iran’s head coach at the Asian Cup in Qatar in 2011.
