CANON CITY – When Karl Pierce took possession of a 1930 Ford Coupe, it was little more than a steel crate.
The color was black in primer, the interior was just a seat and, "it was in rough shape," he said. Over the next 18 months, he did it again in a dream hot rod.
Pierce, a maintenance trainer at Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine, spends his days training mechanics and pbading on his knowledge. After spending 38 years at the mine, he plans to retire to Canon City, where he also owns Thunder Road Liquor.
"I had a good time building it – it was very entertaining. I took it to Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, California and Nevada, "Pierce said.
Pierce recounted that one of his most cherished memories at the auto show had happened when a 2 year old boy crawled into the trunk of his car and looked at the wolf decal.
"I said that the big bad wolf had a car," the boy said to his father, causing the laughter of the father and Pierce.
Pierce will be one of more than 150 hot rod enthusiasts who will exhibit their cars at the 38th Annual Canon Car Club Auto Show, which runs from 8 am to 2 pm. Saturday at Holy Cross Abbey, 2951 E.
