April 16 (Reuters) – Cardiff City earned a lifeline in the Premier League after winning 2-0 in Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday to close the South Coast club two points and maintain the relegation battle desire.
Cardiff had lost six of their last seven games but, knowing that everything but one victory would probably put an end to their hopes of survival, played with confidence from the start.
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing held the ball at the back of the net after 22 minutes, after a twist in the middle of the field.
Brighton, who was beaten 5-0 at home by Bournemouth on Saturday, looked upset and lost 2-0 when Sean Morrison took a free kick in the fifth half.
Although the original team intensified pressure in the final stages, Glenn Murray's pole-facing header was closest, while Cardiff attempted to win a potentially priceless victory.
The victory brings Cardiff to 31 points in 34 games, Brighton on 33 to 33. Southampton counts on 36 points against 33 while Fulham and Huddersfield Town are already relegated. (Report by Mitch Phillips, edited by Pritha Sarkar)
