Carlos Carvalhal returned to management in Portugal, despite "several offers" of clubs in England.
The former manager of Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday has been appointed head coach of Rio Ave., the club Primeira Liga.
"I did not hide that I wanted to stay in England and I received several offers from local clubs," said the 53-year-old.
"But most important to me was that someone shows his willingness to have me in his club."
Wolf boss Nuno Espirito Santo and Reading head coach Jose Gomes both led Rio Ave, which finished seventh in the season last season.
Carvalhal added, "The president showed a real interest in me and my coaching staff and it was a determining factor in my decision."
He returns to his native Portugal without a job since Swansea's relegation to the Premier League in May 2018.
