Carnegie Corporation of New York, a charitable organization, hosted an interactive session in Accra with recipients of its scholarship program.

The meeting identified challenges faced by beneficiaries and discussed ways to improve the program.

The Fellowship Program is designed to help students at the University of Ghana obtain Master's degrees in Philosophy and PhDs in Philosophy in order to become experienced researchers and academics.

Since 2010, approximately $ 10 million has been invested to support beneficiaries.

Scholarship program

Professor Yaa Nyiamoa-Baidu, director of the Carnegie program at the University of Ghana, said the program was launched when the University of Ghana embarked on a major initiative to develop its faculties.

She said so far that Carnegie Corporation has provided funding to support 125 doctoral students and 86 master's students.

"The idea is to encourage faculties to do more research, be more productive and have the expertise to conduct cutting-edge research."

"The program also aims to develop faculty, that is, to support faculties that do not have PhD courses, but also to support outstanding MPhil students and postdoctoral fellows who wish to enroll in the program. academic world, "she said.

Development

She expressed the hope that the program would increase the number of academics in the country who would provide specialized knowledge to solve problems in areas such as health, education and sanitation .

"If you have qualified people with the skills of seasoned researchers, they are able to tackle national problems through the investigations and information provided", she declared.

According to Professor Nyiamoah-Baidu, because of the free high school program, it was important that university faculties be expanded to support the growing number of students entering schools.

"This means that for the free SHS program to succeed, we will need to train more PhDs," she said.

Support

Carnegie Corporation Vice President Deana Arsenian said the company is focused on building the skills of university faculties and improving the research potential of African universities.

"Our work is focused on international peace, the advancement of education and knowledge, and the strengthening of democracy. Up until now, thanks to the scholarship program, we have supported about 15,000 scholarships in Africa to advance their careers, "she said.

Dr. Kwabena Kan-Dapaah, a program recipient, said the program has allowed her to fund her doctoral studies, adding, "This gave me the opportunity to start my research at the University.

I obtained funds to continue my postdoctoral studies which led to the United States, where I undertook different types of research for which two publications have already been produced, "he said. he declares.
