Caroline Mwatha investigates extrajudicial killings by police in Dandora district, east of Nairobi

The missing Kenyan activist, Caroline Mwatha, has been found dead, the police told the BBC.

Ms. Mwatha worked for the Dandora Community Justice Center (DCDC) and documented extrajudicial killings by police on the Dandora estate, east of the capital Nairobi.

She disappeared last Wednesday and efforts to find her gave birth to the hashtag #FindCarolineMwatha.

No other details regarding his death have been made public.

Amnesty International tweets about her concern for Ms. Mwatha Monday and said that he had always hoped to find her alive.

Ferdinand Omondi, of the BBC, said that Ms. Mwatha's body would be in the morgue of Nairobi, sources said.

Her relatives had searched the hospitals and morgues of the city in recent days in the hope of finding her. A vigil was also organized for Ms. Mwatha in Nairobi on Monday.

Kenya's human rights group, Missing Voices, described her as "a brave human rights defender" and said she was last seen on Wednesday afternoon by a friend who had gone to her home in Dandora.

Another friend said that she did not pick up the phone when she was called that same night.
