Scientists have not found any cure for Alzheimer's disease, but they could possibly reverse the symptoms with some key compounds, according to a new report.

Researchers at the University of Southern California recently conducted a study published in the Journal of biological chemistry, to determine the impact of diet on brain disorders. They specifically examined two compounds: epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a key ingredient in green tea, and ferulic acid (FA), found in carrots, tomatoes, rice, wheat and oats.

For their evaluation, they observed healthy mice and exhibiting symptoms similar to those of Alzheimer's disease. They tested them to evaluate their memory and thinking abilities.

One was a Y-shaped labyrinth that tested rodents' spatial work memory, a skill humans use to find their way to a building, "the team said in a statement. been able times, the impaired mice could not.

Analysts then grouped the mice randomly into four different categories. The first group consumed a combination of EGCG and AF, the second group had only EGCG, the third had only eaten AF and the fourth had a placebo.

"After three months, the combination treatment completely restored the spatial working memory and the Alzheimer's mice were as efficient as the healthy comparison mice," said lead author , Terrence Town.

Despite the findings, the researchers noted "that many mouse discoveries never translate into human treatments".

However, they think their findings are promising because they think their data prove that some herbal supplements can help protect against Alzheimer's disease.

"It is not necessary to wait 10 to 12 years for a synthetic drug to be put on the market, you can make these dietary changes today," Town said. "I find that very encouraging."
