People have been growing hemp illegally for years. Farmers have kept their activities quiet and have developed their own techniques, all of which are a bit different, said Christian Cypher, executive vice president of Pyxus International, which directs the work of the agricultural production company on cannabis.
"The cultivation of hemp has been more religious than scientific," he said.
Most hemp farmers grow this plant in the manner of a tomato, a costly and intensive process, said David Williams, agronomist, who studies hemp. This model works for marijuana because you want the flower to look nice. For the hemp that will be used to extract the CBD, this system is incredibly expensive and unnecessary because you only care about what's inside the flower, Williams said.
"If the molecule is interesting and widespread, it will have to be much more efficient than the one we have today," he said.
