Health officials call for caution against kratom, as a new study badociates more deaths with herbal drug than previously known.
Kratom is a Southeast Asian plant sold in tablets, capsules and extracts.
In low doses, kratom acts as a stimulant, but at a high dose, it reduces the dull pain.
It is a popular over-the-counter remedy for opioid withdrawal.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention badyzed reports of more than 27,000 unintentional drug overdoses in 32 states and the Washington area.
The study found that 152 of these people had a kratom in their system and that the drug had caused the death of 91 of them.
This is a higher number than previously reported.
Earlier this year, the US Food and Drug Administration said only 44 deaths had been badociated with the drug.
