National Security Minister-designate Albert Kan Dapaah said the Chief of the Defense Staff (CDS) was tasked with investigating the military invasion of Parliament during his 8th inauguration.
He made this known during his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, February 10, 2021.
Mr. Dapaah told the committee that those involved in the fight will be punished if it is established that their actions were unprofessional.
“I know that orders have been given to the Chief of the Defense Staff (CDS) to investigate the military invasion of Parliament and take appropriate action, if he also comes to the conclusion that what is happening happened on Jan. 7 was absolutely unprofessional, ”he mentioned.
“More than a dozen armed soldiers invaded the parliamentary chamber at dawn on January 7 during the election of a new president which had already been marred by clashes between the lawmakers of the NDC and the New Patriotic Party.
For hours, scuffles broke out, led by the chief whip of NDC lawmakers, Muntaka Mubarak, who was trying to make sure his opponent did not interfere in the secret ballot.
At the height of the situation, brawls broke out with NDC MPs ransacking voting areas and tearing ballot boxes on live television.
Armed military and police personnel then stormed Ghana’s Parliament to confront NDC MPs.
Security personnel finally left after about 10 minutes to hoots from NDC deputies.
There have been calls for the Speaker of Parliament to investigate security personnel in Parliament.
