A New York cemetery worker died after being buried alive in an open grave.

The fatal incident happened around 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Washington Memorial Park on Mount Sinai, according to a press release from the Suffolk County Police Department.

Rodwin Allicock, 42, was working at the bottom of a grave, which authorities said was more than seven feet deep when it collapsed on top of him.

Allicock’s colleagues tried to dig him up, but couldn’t save him, police said.

Members of the Suffolk County Emergency Services and Public Works Department, as well as emergency workers from the Middle Island Fire Department, Hagerman Fire Department, Selden Fire Department and the Department of Setauket fire, all responded to the scene.

Allicock was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical assistant from the Suffolk County Medical Center office.

Police said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had been notified and an investigation was underway.

Following the tragic accident, Allicock’s colleague shared a touching tribute on Facebook.

“Sleep in peace Rodwin Allicock,” the colleague wrote. “You were a great colleague and a great guy!”

According to social media, Allicock had just celebrated his birthday last month.
