Despite the fact that her appearance on Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam” was highly revered, Chance the Rapper revealed that Ye was not necessarily happy with some of her lyrics on the cut.
Speaking to the Recording Academy, Chano explained that he had to convince West to let him use his line on the GRAMMYs. The lyrics “I met Kanye West, I’m never gonna fail / He said,” Let’s do a good job ** with Chance 3 / I hear you have to sell him to snatch the GRAMMY “finally made its way onto the track, but the Coloring Book rapper “had to go back and forth with [West]“to keep it.” I rapped about Kanye’s shit right before he got out that I was working on these three GRAMMYs, and I was like, “If I keep rapping like that, and just say that shit is going to happen, it’s just going to happen. And it started to happen, “he explained.” Kanye didn’t want me to say that [line] on this song. And I had to go back and forth with him to keep my line there.
Chance also discussed his involvement with Pablo’s life, adding: “All this experience working on [Pablo] was very transformative for a lot of people around me as I was 40% of the way I had come with “Coloring Book”. I listened to a lot of gospel [then]. So when I got to camp, whenever I had the auxiliary rope, I would play Fred Hammond or talk about something that I had read in the bible. It was a different vibe than the one Kanye hit me for because I was stepping out of the heels of “Acid Rap”. So I had this different vibe and energy, and it was very well received. He continued, “Kanye was like, ‘I wanna have more gospel [moments] on this album ”, and people finally started calling it a gospel album. Just be able to rap [with] the person who is probably the reason I became a rapper – being able to produce and write and be in the intro, the first real rap verse you hear on the album, was crazy to me. I was, at that point, making him exist like, ‘Kanye is going to hit us soon. You’re gonna work with ‘Ye soon.’ And when it happened, I had to keep doing that. I had to keep telling myself, “I’m just going to say what’s going to happen.”
