Joe Aribo was invited to continue playing football in England even though he did not sign a new contract with Charlton Athletic.

This is the message from Steve Gallen, recruiting manager at Addicks, who still hopes the Camberwell-born midfielder, who is 22, will extend his stay in SE7.

The Aribo deal expires at the end of the month, but as he is under 24, he is entitled to compensation for Charlton.

This figure would be greatly reduced if the player chooses to move outside of England.

"We offered Joe some contracts. We have been discussing for months and months, "said Gallen.

"I've also read the stories about Celtic and Rangers [being interested]. We really hope that he will not leave. The main thing for us is that, first, we want Joe to stay. It's 100%, there is no doubt.

"But if Joe decides to go, we would really like him to speak English, for two reasons. First, because it's the best place he can go – the best place to develop his career. Lee [Bowyer] 100% think so, he has said it on countless occasions.

"And two, because if he went to a club in England, our club would be rewarded. We would have a fair badessment of its value.

"When he crosses the borders, the club will not do it.

"In my opinion, it's pure and simple, we do not have access to this money – we have nothing to spend.

"If he went to Middlesbrough – and that's a purely hypothetical example – say 2 million pounds, that would be a good amount of money, I think, for his years at the academy. .

"It's a pat on the back for Steve Avory [academy boss] and people like that. But if he goes to Hoffenheim and we receive 300,000 euros, then that is not the case.

"I've talked to Joe many times, just like Lee.

"I do not think it would be fair for the Charlton Athletic football club to cross the border and we only get a small fee.

"If he leaves, then we hope he agrees with us – no matter what club – everyone is happy, we shake hands and move on to something else.

"The ultimate goal is that we want Joe to stay and we made him a very good contract offer."
