While more and more car manufacturers have entered the electric scooter market recently, we have seen some interesting models. And now, BMW has taken the lead with its electric scooter. Unfortunately, it was a swing and a miss.
BMW E-Scooter
The new BMW electric scooter was born from a partnership with Micro, the creators of the micro-scooter.
According to BMW:
A new trend is emerging this year in the world of electric mobility: electric scooters. It's the smart form of daily commuting – and that's the reason why BMW Lifestyle will expand its range of compact urban scooters for young and old alike by September 2019. The launch of the BMW E-Scooter, pioneering, encourages the BMW Group to reinforce its successful cooperation with Micro (inventor of the micro-scooter) with another convincing demonstration of innovative technology and high-quality design at work.
But the new BMW driving, dubbed "BMW E-Scooter" with creativity, has a technical sheet that will not impress you.
The maximum speed of the scooter is 20 km / h. I used other electric scooters at such a modest speed, but they cost $ 320. On the other hand, the BMW E-Scooter costs around 890 dollars.
The range of the scooter is 12 km. Again, this is not extraordinary for small electric scooters. I have mounted several with scales like this one. But these scooters cost $ 299.
With a low power 150 W engine only, the BMW E-Scooter will probably not be able to handle the slopes very well. The acceleration should also be a situation of "hurry up and wait".
At least the battery only takes two hours to recharge, so the scooter has it all!
The front suspension, the LED lights and the folding stem are good, but again, here is a list of other scooters that meet or exceed these specifications at a much cheaper price.
Electrek's Take
I do not want to be too harsh with BMW here, but it seems ridiculous to enter the market with these features at this price.
With so Electric scooters out there, you really must have something different to the competition these days. In this case, the only difference with the BMW E-Scooter is its label. For the same price, I would rather buy a completely crazy Widewheel scooter with a power three times higher and a complete suspension.
It does not even look like they understand that other scooters exist. Listen to how they describe the engine and the battery:
"The 150-watt motor and lithium-ion battery slip almost out of sight in the footrest and rear wheel, making the new E-Scooter at every inch the everyday practical companion."
Ok, so you have a battery in the bridge and a motor in the wheel. Cool. You know who else has that? All other scooter manufacturers. (Agree, some scooters have the battery in the rod, but you see what I mean)
Hoping to get truly awesome scooters from automakers with the capital to invest in real industry improvements.
