Chelsea reportedly identified Goncalo Guedes (Valencia) as a long-term replacement for Eden Hazard and offered £ 62 million to the Portuguese international.
According to Plaza Deportiva, quoted by the Daily Express, the Bleus have made an offer for the winger through the intermediary of his agent, Jorge Mendes.
The 22-year-old was one of Valencia's most outstanding players last season, helping the club to finish fourth in La Liga as well as the last four in the Europa League.
Guedes, who scored eight goals and four badists in Valencia last season, was also Portugal's hero in the League of Nations final against the Netherlands, his second-half goal proving the difference between the two teams.
Chelsea has a transfer ban that weighs on two windows this summer, but the Blues have appealed the decision to the court of arbitration for sport.
In the best of cases, Chelsea will have its two-wicket transfer ban frozen this summer, which means it can reach a potential deal for the impressive Guedes in anticipation of the new campaign.
What rank would Guedes have in the Chelsea purchase records if he made a £ 62 million transfer?
Jorginho – £ 50m
Midfielder Jorginho became the first coach of Maurizio Sarri at the head of Chelsea. The Italian joined Sarri from Napoli for a £ 50 million contract last year.
Fernando Torres – £ 50m
Chelsea obtained the services of Torres in 2011 from Liverpool for £ 50 million. The Spaniard won three major honors during his four-year stint at Stamford Bridge.
Christian Pulisic – £ 58m
The Blues spent £ 58 million against Pulisic Borussia Dortmund in January. The American was preparing for his first season with the Blues this summer.
Goncalo Guedes – £ 62m
If the Blues secured Guedes' services for £ 62m this summer, it would make Chelsea's winger the most expensive of all time.
Kepa Arrizabalaga – £ 71m
Kepa Arrizabalaga is the keeper of the Chelsea record. The Spaniard left Athletic Bilbao for £ 71m last summer following Thibaut Courtois' move to Real Madrid.
