Chelsea goaltender hunt enters panic mode with strange targets

Chelsea has little hope that Thibaut Courtois remains. With their target at the top of the list, the search quickly went into total panic

When it became clear that Thibaut Courtois would not extend his contract, Chelsea began preparing his sale. To do this, they targeted Alisson from Rome. But Liverpool entered the race and swept the Brazilian.

With the target in mind, Chelsea could have looked at the short list they had prepared and just went to the next name. But given the goals now, it's simple to say that Alisson was the only name on the list. Some of the targets now range from strange to unpleasant, indicating that Chelsea has gone into panic mode in his attempt to replace Courtois with this window.

Gianluigi Donnarumma tops the list. On paper, it is the obvious choice. Maurizio Sarri would know his work from Serie A, he is only 19 years old, and he showed tons of promises. The good manager could not only turn him into the drummer of the world, but into a long decade (or decades) of starting.

But this illusion sinks quickly. Donnarumma brings the drama. Mino Raiola is a great agent in world football. He has some of the biggest players in his portfolio. He likes to move these players around mbadive money offers. Opt out, and he'll just take that player to the next highest bidder. It would be an inconvenience to have a Raiola player on the list.

After Donnarumma, targets are more acceptable but become rather strange. The next player on the list to reach is probably Kasper Schmeichel fresh out of impressive performances at the World Cup. Schmeichel is a fantastic goalkeeper who would count as locally grown and add leadership to the club. But at age 31, it's hard to see him being the man between the sticks for long.

The most sentimental option about is Petr Cech. Cech would certainly add some leadership to the locker room, but his best days are behind him. Arsenal came out a replaced for a reason; it's just not what it was. Chelsea can no longer afford to have Cech between the sticks.

The last effort, last effort seems to be aimed at Jordan Pickford. Pickford would be the ideal choice of the four, but would cost an arm and a leg after the World Cup. Also, Everton only bought it a year ago, so it would be hard to discard it.

The Schmeichel and Cech links at least refer to Chelsea who trusts someone they already have in the house. Chelsea has a lot of talented young goalies who are not ready yet, but having Schmeichel or Cech as buffers could give them room to grow.
