Although Michy Batshuayi opened the scoring in the eighth minute, the Irish organizers scored a tying goal at the last minute.

The scorer Eric Molloy is a lawsuit for the Gypsies and his mother was sitting in the press gallery shouting: "It's my son!"

Lampard, just seven days after starting work, will have heard different calls.

Local fans quipped the former Derby boss, chanting, "You'll be fired in the morning".

Lampard will have been more interested in the performances of his players – and was delighted with what he saw.

He said: "It was a difficult first match for us because we have not been back for a long time, just a few days.

"So there was some pressure on the guys and we worked them very hard and I'm happy with the result.

"Fitness was our problem, I wanted to stretch them a little and put them under pressure.

"That's what the pre-season is and the faster we get there, the level we want, the better."

"We wanted to win the match as you always do, but that's not it, it's all about fitness and fitness, and I think some of the performances – especially the younger ones – were really good.

"I have been really happy [with the attitude of players].

"We have high standards and we've built them in. We need intensity in our game and I'm delighted with the way they worked and their attitude."

Batshuayi, who was returning from a loan to Crystal Palace, was impressed by his strength, his pace and his ability to leap towards the goal of opening.

The young Billy Gilmour and Conor Gallagher were the outstanding performers who hope to get Lampard into the mood for next season.

Tiemoue Bakayoko figures in the second half after a loan season at AC Milan, while Kurt Zouma was back in the Chelsea Blue after a year at Everton.
