Maurizio Sarri has confirmed that Chelsea will hire Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic on a final contract at the end of the season.

Croatian international Kovacic has joined the Premier League club with a loan of one season last summer and has played 46 appearances with the Blues in all competitions.

The midfield's performances have met with mixed criticism from Chelsea supporters, but Sarri says he wants Croatian to convert his loan agreement into a permanent transfer.

"I want to try with Kovacic. He is only on loan, of course, but I would really like Kovacic to stay with us, "said the Italian manager.

"You know very well that in this position we have some problems because we only have Jorginho, and in my opinion, Kovacic could become a very good central midfielder.

"Of course, he's not a defensive midfielder (for the moment) but, as you know, in this position, I prefer a very technical player.

"In the last match, Jorginho hit 161 balls, so it's very important for us to have great quality in this position – great quality, not for the last pbad, but great quality in terms of moving the ball."

Chelsea, currently fifth in the Premier League, will face London rivals West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

When asked if the Blues had to win every game to finish in the top four, Sarri replied, "No, because I think the last part of the season will be really hard for all teams.

"We just have to fight and think about our matches, and then I think we have to fight until the last minutes of the last game. But without looking at the other results, I think.

By defeating West Ham, Chelsea would climb to third place in the Premier League, though Arsenal and Tottenham may come back over the Blues with their upcoming matches.

Just three days after the West Ham match, Chelsea traveled to the Czech Republic to face Slavia Prague in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
