The lukewarm response of the Italian to the first exit of the Three Lions from his charge sparked sharp criticism before Sunday's clash against Cardiff

Jamie Carragher reacted angrily to Maurizio Sarri's casual badysis of Callum Hudson-Odoi's international debut, saying the Chelsea boss should be more interested in his young star.

Hudson-Odoi, 18, scored his first England title at the international match against the Czech Republic. He started his first match three days later against Montenegro.

The Three Lions have won their two matches, making it an ideal starting point for qualifying for the Euro 2020, but Sarri was disappointed by the teenager bow.

Publisher's choice

"I saw the English national team for 20 minutes and Callum did not start very well on the right," said the Italian press when he was invited to comment.

"He made very left, right from his first action, but I know very well that he prefers to play on the left."

Sarri's thoughts did not please much to the former star of England and Liverpool, Carragher, who believes he should have been watching every minute of Hudson-Odoi's debut.

"It's a boy who makes his international debut, why do not you watch the full match?" Carragher fired for Sky sports.

"You could say that he's watching a lot of his Chelsea teammates flipping through the chains, but he does not need to watch them, they're all 27, 28, 29 years old.

"He's a young boy … Can he handle the spotlight of playing for England?" He's a boy I'm trying to keep in my club. "

The future of Hudson-Odoi at Stamford Bridge is by no means badured, his contract is in place at the end of the next season and little progress has been made with regards to an extension.

The Blues had to resist Bayern Munich's keen interest in the January transfer – and according to Carragher, this type of treatment will not make a youngster feel valued.

"So rejecting the boy's international debut – perhaps the greatest thing ever happened to him as a footballer – I can just imagine that people above Sarri are shaking their heads and wondering" why do you say something so stupid in the press conference? " he added.
