MAurizio Sarri revealed that the Chelsea players had held an hour-long crisis conversation after their humiliation in Manchester City, as the club tried to preserve their season from implosion.
Sarri is under increasing pressure before a couple of crucial days during which his future as Chelsea manager could be decided, starting with the Europa League match with Malmo.
Chelsea's hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League could be based on their European campaign, and a surprise defeat by Swedish minnows on two legs would only reinforce the feeling of a routed campaign.
Bruce Buck, the president of Chelsea, even made a rare appearance at the Sarri press conference to take stock of the first leg as the Italian reflected on the consequences of the 6-0 draw at Etihad Stadium: the worst defeat of the club since 1991.
