Will Maurizio Sarri have time to develop his project in Chelsea?
Maurizio Sarri's project in Chelsea will take time, but do they have the patience to stick to it? They should perhaps follow the example of Manchester City, writes Adam Bate.
The insistence of Gary Neville on the fact that Manchester United should never appoint a manager whose ideas do not fit the philosophy of the club will have touched the fans. It's hard to think of a player who has never worn the Barcelona jersey and who could fit more easily into the big side of Guardiola than David Silva.
Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling were also recruited during the last season of Manuel Pellegrini. The Chilean coach fulfilled his role of facilitator. He was playing a football style that he would not need to unlearn under his successor. It was far too literally to suit Pellegrini in the last months of his reign, a team that was just waiting for Guardiola.
Although this was not enough to ensure the immediate success of Manchester City with the coach of their choice, these difficult times helped to reinforce the belief that they needed to keep up the momentum. Compare that to the environment in which Maurizio Sarri is supposed to import his standard game philosophy to Chelsea this season.

There too, the desire for change was palpable, with the desire to move away from the counter-punching style of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte. The temptation is to require that the coach optimizes the resources of the existing team, but the appointment of Sarri would be absurd. The partnership between Eden Hazard and Gonzalo Higuain seems already promising.

Given that they can no longer beat their rivals financially, some will argue that Chelsea must avoid the quick fix mentality to make the next jump. The alternative could let them escape to City and other players – a club that has never been sidelined aside calls for the next return of Mourinho.

But there will be others who offer a different warning. Continuing on the wrong path and not following the right path could be worse than not having direction at all. Could he really be one of the great innovators of the game, a man who is waiting to enjoy the glory that his wonderful team of Naples could have been able to achieve with time and money? Or have the limits already been exposed by Jorginho's struggles and the sterility of the possession of his team? The truth is surely in the middle, but it is up to Chelsea to take it into account.
Whatever they decide, it has a cost. Do not use Kante at best is a lost opportunity.
