Some supporters of the New Patriotic Party, NPP, in the Chereponi district of the Northeast region destroyed party structures to protest the appointment of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as chief executive of the district , DCE.

Zuwera Mada Nashiru has been appointed as the new DCE according to the official list of candidates for the various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies, MMDA, released today by the Minister of Local Government Dan Botwe.

A video shared by Accra-based Citi FM showed angry party supporters demolishing a structure believed to be for the party’s district office.

Other videos circulating online showed that the razed structure had been set on fire. With reports indicating that the party chairman in the region has also been attacked.

Police intelligence and previous deployments

The incidents took place despite previous deployments at the expense of intelligence.

“The Chereponi District Police Command, upon receipt of the information promptly invited the Chereponi Constituency President Aliu Sulemana and some of the youth leaders and after discussion the President and the youth leaders realized the need to keep the peace and respect the advice of the police not to continue with the protest.

“They also promised to respect the law on public order and to inform the police accordingly, if they intended to organize the demonstration,” said a police statement.

Odododiodioo arrests and warning against illegal demonstrations

The Ghana Police Service issued a warning on Saturday evening to those planning to engage in illegal protests following the publication of the candidacies.

Police also announced the arrest of four people in Odododiodioo constituency in Accra for protests against the replacement of Mohammed Adjei Sowah as mayor of Accra.

And after the appointments?

Dan Botwe, speaking to reporters at a press briefing on September 19, said the published list had been forwarded to the various regional ministers.

He explained that regional ministers are now required to contact the electoral management body, the Election Commission.

The EC, he added, will now begin the assembly election process on the various candidates.
