Chevron said the Dutch court's ruling upheld the decisions of two Dutch lower courts that rejected Ecuador's attempts to overturn those awards.

"The Supreme Court of the Netherlands held that the disputed arbitration awards were in accordance with public policy and justified by the concern to prevent irreversible harm to Chevron," the company said.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court of Canada rejected requests to compel Chevron's Canadian unit to pay Ecuador's $ 9.5 billion judgment against the company. for pollution in the Andean country.

Residents of the Lago Agrio region of Ecuador are attempting to force Chevron to pay for water and soil contamination caused from 1964 to 1992 by Texaco, a Chevron property acquired in 2001.

The villagers obtained a verdict against Chevron in Ecuador in 2011.

The latest decision adds to several court wins that Chevron won against the plaintiffs and its legal team in this case.
