April 29, 2019 (China Knowledge) – Chicken prices are on the rise in China as Chinese consumers start replacing pork with poultry as pork prices rise as farmers continue to slaughter hog herds to stop the spread of African swine fever epidemics in the country.

This means that buyers who hope to use chicken as a cheaper alternative to pork could be disappointed, as chicken is still rare in the country and meat prices are rising rapidly.

China has been facing a chicken shortage since 2016, when poultry imports from the United States and France were banned due to the outbreak of bird flu in those countries. The ban resulted in a sharp drop in the number of imported breeding stock for white fowl chickens that China relies on to supply chicken.

The chicken population in China has since declined to settle at 4.16 billion birds in 2006, up from 6 billion in 2016. This population is expected to fall further by 10% this year, which will worsen the scarcity this year and will raise prices for poultry.

The national average wholesale price of chicken meat has increased by over 68% since last March, with boilers selling at 14 RMB / kg on Beijing's largest food wholesale market, Xinfadi, up 27%. % compared to February.

This price increase is expected to continue in the coming months as more and more people turn to chicken as pork prices rise.
