Childish Gambino wins the award for best music video at 2019 Grammy Awards for its controversial visual for "This Is America". The award was presented during the television broadcast of the Pre-Grammy Award Sunday afternoon (February 10).

Gambino was not there to accept the award, but his long-time collaborator and co-director, Hiro Murai, agreed with his two collaborators. After receiving the award, the filmmaker thanked everyone involved in producing the video. "It's incredible," he said. "I accept this award on behalf of Donald Glover and all those who have worked on production."

He also thanked his mother and father. "[I want to thank] my parents. They did not work on the video but they worked a lot on me, "he joked.

Murai, who has directed several episodes of comedy drama Atlanta, directed the dark and surreal video, which highlights some of the problematic issues in America with a group of teenagers dancing behind the Grammy nominated pseudonym. Throughout the clip, the camera follows Gambino (aka Donald Glover) as he moves from one section to another and the mood changes from joy to violence and chaos.

The opening scene is particularly shocking when Gambino shoots a man with a bag over his head. From there we see many topical references on Charleston Church Shooting, Charlottesville Protests, Police Brutality and Black Lives Matter.

Since its release in May 2018, "This Is America" has gone platinum and won the award for the best hip-hop video at BET 2018 Hip Hop Price.

Congratulations to Childish Gambino and Hiro Murai.
