Experts say that brushing practices do not comply with the recommendations.
The Centers for Disease Control released Friday a study of about 5,000 children aged 3 to 15 years.
They found that nearly 80% of parents did not brush their teeth early enough.
Health professionals say that brushing should start as soon as the child's first tooth.
The CDC also found that about one-third of children brushed their teeth once a day instead of twice a day.
According to the study, nearly 40% also used too much toothpaste.
A quantity at the size of a pea is recommended to prevent children from accidentally swallowing too much toothpaste.
As for the time when children first go to the dentist, experts say at the latest on their first birthday.
