Children's Hospital is exposed to the deadly disease because of infected ham

An urgent warning was issued following the exposure of a children's hospital to a deadly disease in infected sliced ​​ham.

The Listeria bacteria has been detected in infected sandwiches and salads served to patients between May 10 and May 20 at the Queensland Children's Hospital.

The hospital has contacted families who may be in contact with the contaminated food, but no cases have been reported.

"Contaminated ham was detected during routine food and safety tests at the hospital and removed from the patient menu," the department said.

"Children's Health Queensland works closely with the Metro South Health Authority and Public Health Department to ensure the health and safety of all patients and families likely to have consumed these sandwiches .

The deadly disease can be extremely harmful to pregnant women because it can cause miscarriages, stillbirths or premature births.

Deputy Leader of the Opposition Tim Mander said the contamination was worrying for families.

"The people of Queensland go to hospitals to improve, not to get sick," said Mander.

"I am sensitive to the patients and visitors who have visited this hospital during this time of infection, they have now added stress by wondering whether or not they will get sick in the next few days. "

Listeriosis is a type of bacteria that is carried by certain foods and symptoms can take weeks to appear.

Symptoms that can be treated include fever, vomiting, headache and diarrhea.
