China's natural gas consumption increases in the first quarter in the fight against pollution: Xinhua

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – China's natural gas consumption has risen steadily in the first quarter, as part of the country's air pollution control, the Xinhua official news agency reported.

Apparent natural gas consumption rose 11.6% in January-March from the previous year, reaching 77 billion cubic meters, after strong annual growth of 18.1% in 2018, said Xinhua , citing data from the Commission for Development and Reform (NRC).

China has issued a three – year action plan in 2018 to combat pollution, with the aim of increasing to 10% by 2020 the share of natural gas in its total primary energy consumption, Xinhua announced.

According to a separate article published Saturday in Xinhua, China consumed 76.9 million tons of refined petroleum in the first quarter, up 0.4 percent from the previous year.

Gasoline consumption rose 3.7 percent while diesel consumption fell 4.1 percent over the same period, Xinhua said, citing data from the NDRC.
