BEIJING – The official indicator of China’s non-factory business activity fell in December, but growth momentum in the country’s service sector remained strong.

China’s official non-manufacturing purchasing managers’ index edged down to 55.7 in December from 56.4 in November, the National Bureau of Statistics said Thursday.

The December reading was above the 50 mark, separating the expansion in activity from the contraction.

The sub-index measuring business activity in the service sector fell to 54.8 in December from 55.7 in November, while the sub-index measuring construction activity fell to 60.7 from 60, 5 the previous month. The new orders sub-index for the whole non-manufacturing sector, a measure of demand, fell to 53.6 in December from 53.9 in November.

The non-manufacturing PMI covers services such as retail, aviation, software, and real estate and construction sectors. Data is based on responses to monthly questionnaires sent to purchasing managers of 4,000 companies in 37 non-manufacturing sectors.

The official manufacturing PMI, also released on Thursday, fell to 51.9 in December from 52.1 in November.
