BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) – China's leading neurosurgery hospital has released a database of 2,000 gene samples from Chinese patients with glioma, a type of brain tumor. It provides mbadive amounts of data to improve research and explore the precise treatment of deadly brain disease.

The Chinese Glioma Genome Atlas (CGGA) database (http://cgga.org.cn) was created by researchers at Beijing's Tiantan Hospital, Capital Medical University, after a sample collection of 15 years.

Jiang Tao, experienced neurosurgeon and founder of the database, said that it was a web application not only for data storage, but also a tool for 39 badysis allowing users to browse the DNA mutation profile, gene expression profile and perform correlation badysis and survival.

"We expect to map a complete glioma genome of the Chinese population using the database," Jiang said.

A glioma is a type of tumor that begins in the glial cells of the brain or spine. It comprises about 30% of all brain and central nervous system tumors and 80% of brain malignancies.

The database is now available for free and has been cited by a group of research institutions in the United States and Europe.

Jiang said the database would help more researchers around the world to reveal the genetic mechanisms of the brain tumor and provide guidance for the development of new drugs.
