NEW YORK, July 13 (Reuters) – Saturday night, a big blackout plunged much of Manhattan into darkness. A choir and Broadway musicals entertained tourists with impromptu performances on the street.

The breakdowns occurred around 19 hours. (2300 GMT), so many shows have begun in the theaters of Midtown and on Lincoln Center Square, on the Upper West Side of New York.

With subway stations and suddenly dark traffic lights, thousands of people dumped themselves out on a hot summer night. Some were surprised by what they found, including writer Briallen Hopper, stuck in a subway train for one hour.

"I guess that's what they call a New York moment," she wrote on Twitter with a video of a choir singing at sunset. "I went out to see dark restaurants and traffic lights, civilians directing traffic and a concert evacuated from Carnegie Hall down the street."

Another Twitter user, Caryn Ross, agreed, by posting a video of the choir and orchestra street concert with the #BeautifulSoundsDuringBlackout hashtag: "Now it's turning lemonade into lemonade!" she wrote.

Scenes of several civilians entering busy intersections to help direct traffic due to lack of traffic lights were also unexpected.

A middle-aged man in shorts and a red tank top managed the flow of vehicles at a junction for at least 45 minutes, prompting applause on social media.

On a photo taken on Twitter after dark, a civilian was seen directing traffic in the Hell's Kitchen district with a lightsaber.

At Madison Square Garden, the power outage abruptly ended a Jennifer Lopez concert, plunging the arena into darkness.

"I am obviously torn apart and devastated," said Lopez, a native of the Bronx, in a video clip. She sent a Twitter message for her fans. "I love you, I'm really sorry it happened in the middle of our moment, at our show"

All Broadway theaters were closed due to the blackout, with the exception of the Winter Garden Theater, the Nederlander Theater and the Lyceum Theater, authorities said.

But among those who entertained theatergoers with improvised performances, there were nevertheless the actors of the musicals "Waitress", "Hadestown", "Come From Away" and "Rock Of Ages".

Antony, a Twitter user, posted a video of the cast of "Hamilton: An American Musical" singing theater windows to the crowd on the street below.

"It was awesome!" he wrote. (Report by Daniel Wallis, edited by Jonathan Oatis)
