Christians on Sunday April 4 commemorate Easter Sunday, also known as Pascha or Resurrection Sunday to mark the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The New Testament reveals that Resurrection Sunday took place on the third day after his burial, after his crucifixion on Good Friday by the Romans at Calvary.
Believers are said to celebrate the defeat of the death of Jesus Christ with his resurrection, creating the hope of salvation for mankind.
According to Christian tradition, the death of Jesus Christ paid for the sins of mankind, while his resurrection symbolized believers’ anticipation of having their own resurrection.
Many Christians around the world celebrate the day with special church services, candles and ringing bells.
The GNA has learned that in the Philippines and Spain, for example, processions are held on this day.
In Ghana too, some believers organize processions on Sundays at dawn, sometimes through cemeteries “in search” of the Risen Christ.
In the gospel, Mary Magdalene visited the tomb, where Jesus was buried and found it empty.
However, an angel told him that Jesus had risen.
For this reason, Christians have celebrated his resurrection for centuries.
Before the festivities, the Christian Council had asked Christians to mark the day by strictly respecting security protocols.
“Strictly follow safety protocols, especially nasal mask wear, social distancing, and the use of hand sanitizers,” Board Chairman Reverend Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo said in an interview with the Agency Ghana Press Release.
While this year’s celebration is limited due to the covid-19 pandemic, churches are expected to hold services, many, virtually.
