BEIJING, April 10 (Xinhua) – Chinese researchers have uncovered the mechanism by which chronic stress promotes the development of bad cancer by informing the future clinical treatment of cancer.

Cancer patients are often accompanied by negative emotions such as anxiety, hopelessness and fear, risk factors facilitating tumor growth and promoting cancer progression. However, the specific mechanisms of how chronic stress affects cancer development remain unknown.

Researchers at the Dalian Medical University discovered that chronic stress could increase epinephrine levels, which improved lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA) and promoted the formation of stem cells resembling bad cancer.

Using a screening of drugs targeting LDHA, they discovered that vitamin C reversed the stress-like chronic stem cancer-like phenotype.

The research was published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

According to leading researcher Liu Qiang, research demonstrates the critical importance of psychological factors in promoting stem-like properties in bad cancer cells and offers a promising therapeutic approach for bad cancer.

"Vitamin C, an agent that reduces LDHA, may be a potential approach to fight bad cancer badociated with stress," Liu said.

Liu's team is engaged in the dynamic regulation of cancer stem cell research as well as in the mechanism of psychosocial behavior affecting tumor development.

According to Ms. Liu, patients with bad cancer, ovarian cancer or stomach cancer often have negative emotions, which speeds up the development of their own tumors.

"It is necessary to monitor their chronic stress comprehensively by conducting psychological badessments and performing blood tests including epinephrine levels," Liu said.
