Church of Florida organizes "dog friendly" services

A Florida church attracts attention for a weekly service welcoming outstanding parishioners, dogs.

Father Albert Cutie, rector of St. Benedict's Episcopal Church in Plantation, said the institution held a "dog party" at 6 pm. Saturday services for about 10 years.

"Can you really pray and leave a loved one behind?" Cutie told the Sun-Sentinel of South Florida.

He said the faithful canines behaved remarkably well when they sat on the benches with their owners.

"We sometimes have 10 to 12 dogs at a time," said Cutie. "We never really hear them much – unless they meet after communion and then they start barking, but everyone is waiting for it."

Cutie said the services are especially appealing to people who live alone with their pets.

"What I love about this service – and I think that's the reason we've got it – is that a lot of our people live alone." said Cutie. "They are old, they have lost their spouse or have been living alone for a long time, and their dog is really becoming their companion in every way and their closest family member."

He said that other types of pets are welcomed into the church once a year for an animal blessing service.

"Why would not they be welcome in the house of God?" he said. "They are creatures of God."
