The reopening of theaters in New York this weekend didn’t set the box office on fire. North American theatrical recipes have remained relatively low-key, despite a few major novelties like Disney’s DIS,
“Raya and the Last Dragon” and LGF.A from Lionsgate,
Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, the “Chaos Walking” action flick, according to studio estimates on Sunday.
Walt Disney Animation’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” grossed approximately $ 8.6 million at 2,045 locations across North America. The well-commented fantasy adventure, featuring the voices of Awkwafina and Kelly Marie Tran, is also available for Disney + subscribers to rent and stream at home for $ 29.99. Gross flows were not reported.
“Tom & Jerry”, from AT & T’s T,
Warner Bros., which is available to stream free to HBO Max subscribers, grossed $ 6.6 million from 2,563 North American theaters in its second available weekend. Last weekend, the animated film won the best national opening of the year with $ 13.7 million.
“Chaos Walking,” meanwhile, debuted with $ 3.8 million. Director Doug Liman’s futuristic film “Edge of Tomorrow” cost around $ 100 million to make.
About 80% of the domestic market is currently allowed to operate with limited capacity. Many parts of North America are not yet fully open, including Los Angeles and most counties in California, Washington DC and much of Canada.
Disney hopes to keep “Raya” in theaters throughout the spring. There are few big family films on the schedule until early summer, and the company is hoping for an increase in play during the spring break and as new territories reopen.
Internationally, “Raya and the Last Dragon” earned about $ 17.6 million in 32 territories – with the highest grossing China at $ 8.4 million.
